Best Men’s Physique Board Shorts: 7 Things That Improve Your Stage Look
The best men’s physique board shorts are not simply the pair with the loudest design. They are the pair that help present the physique you have spent months building.
After competing in more than 30 shows, judging bodybuilding competitions and coaching over 800 competitors from amateurs to olympians, I have seen excellent physiques weakened by the wrong shorts and average shorts made worse by the wrong fit.
This guide explains what actually matters when choosing men’s physique competition shorts, how to test them before show day and why PATRONUS created the first ropeless men’s physique board shorts.

What should the best men’s physique board shorts actually do?
A strong pair should do four jobs at the same time:
Create a clean, secure waistline without visually widening the midsection
Frame the quad sweep and not look excessively baggy
Stay in position through your poses, transitions and walking
Meet the current clothing rules of the athlete’s specific federation and event
Colour and graphics matter, but they should support those four jobs not compensate for poor construction.
1. The waistband should strengthen your V-taper
The waistband sits at one of the most visually important points of a men’s physique presentation. If it bunches, bows out or creates bulk at the front, the waist can appear wider. That immediately reduces the shoulder-to-waist contrast you are trying to display.
Traditional board shorts usually tighten with a front drawstring. The knot, eyelets and gathered fabric can create a busy focal point in the centre of the waist.
PATRONUS replaces the rope with an adjustable Velcro tightening system. The front remains flatter and cleaner while the waistband can be cinched to the athlete’s shape. The goal is not merely to keep the shorts up; it is to create a sharper transition from the lats into the waist.
What good waistband fit looks like
Secure without digging into the obliques
Flat across the front, without a central knot or excess bunching
2. Choose from your actual waist measurement—not your jeans size
Your usual trouser size is not a reliable competition-short measurement. Brands size differently, and jeans may sit higher or lower than posing shorts.
Measure around the exact point where the waistband will sit. Keep the tape level, stand naturally and do not pull your stomach in. If you are still in prep, consider how much your waist is realistically expected to change before the show rather than choosing from bodyweight alone.
PATRONUS shorts are available in sizes 26, 28, 30 and 32. The adjustable Velcro waistband controls the waist shape, while expandable zip panels provide additional room when required. Each side panel adds approximately one inch to the waist and leg area when opened.
That adjustability is useful during prep, but it does not make measurement unnecessary. Start with the correct base size, then use the adjustment system to refine the fit.
3. The leg should frame your quads—not hide them
Men’s physique shorts should not fit shapeless.
Too much flapping fabric through the thigh can hide the outer quad sweep and make the lower body look boxy. A leg opening that is too tight can grip the thigh and nterrupt posing movement.
Look for a controlled, tailored shape:
Enough room to move and pose comfortably
A clean line over the glutes rather than a flat, sagging seat
A leg opening that follows the thigh without clinging to it
Minimal excess fabric at the side and back
PATRONUS uses a tailored thigh, sculpted side panels and raised contour piping to frame the quad sweep and pull the eye towards the waist. The shorts are designed around a competitor’s proportions rather than a generic beach-short block.
4. Length must suit both your proportions and your federation
The correct length is not determined by height alone. Two athletes of the same height can have different femur lengths, waist positions and quad shapes. Where the waistband sits also changes where the hem finishes.
Your shorts should reveal enough quad to show your proportions while remaining within the current rules of your federation. For example, the current official NPC Men’s Physique rules state that board shorts must sit one inch below the navel, extend to two inches above the kneecap and be tapered. Other federations and individual promoters may use different wording.
Always check the latest rules for your exact show before ordering. Do not rely solely on an old show photo, social-media post or another athlete’s shorts.
PATRONUS uses a stage-optimised above-the-knee cut, but the final position will still depend on your body proportions and chosen waist placement.

5. Fabric should move without adding visual bulk
Your shorts need to remain comfortable and controlled through walking, posing, sitting backstage and repeated movements during comparisons.
Look for a lightweight performance fabric with:
Multiway stretch
Enough structure to retain its shape
A smooth surface that does not create unnecessary bulk
Comfort against the skin across a long show day
Strong, consistent colour under bright lighting
Avoid heavy beach fabric that holds rigidly around the thigh, as well as ultra-thin fabric. The aim is movement with structure.
PATRONUS uses a lightweight multiway stretch fabric selected to balance comfort, movement and a clean stage silhouette.
6. Colour and panel placement should guide the eye
Choose a colour that separates clearly from your competition tan and does not disappear into the stage background. Under strong lighting, very dark or muddy colours can lose detail, while a well-placed bright accent can improve visual separation.
The design itself should also work with the physique. Random graphics can make the waist or thighs look wider. Purposeful panel lines can create the opposite effect.
Across PATRONUS designs, contour piping and panels are positioned to narrow towards the waist and open across the thigh. This visually reinforces the V-taper while framing the quad sweep.
When choosing a design, ask:
Does it contrast with my tan?
Does it remain clear under strong light?
Does the design improve my waist or away from it?
Will it stand out without distracting from my physique?
7. Test the shorts while posing—not just in a mirror
A pair can look right while you are standing relaxed and still fail once you open your lats, rotate into a back pose or move through transitions.
Before show day, record a short posing video in your shorts. Use the lighting and camera height you normally use for check-ins, then review the following:
Does the waistband stay level in the front and back poses?
Does the waist remain clean when you fully flare your lats?
Do the shorts pull across the glutes or thighs during transitions?
Does the hem remain above the knee throughout the routine?
Can you walk naturally without the legs catching or riding up?
Do you touch or adjust the shorts at any point?
If you have to keep fixing them, the fit is not finished.

How should men’s physique board shorts fit?
The waistband should sit securely without compressing the waist or sliding during posing. The seat should follow the glutes without sagging, and the thigh should look tailored rather than tight. The hem position must suit your proportions and the rules of your show.
The simplest standard is this: once you start posing, you should be able to forget about the shorts.
Why PATRONUS created ropeless men’s physique board shorts
Most competition shorts still rely on the same front drawstring used in ordinary beachwear. We believed the waistband could do more for an athlete’s presentation.
PATRONUS was created to remove the rope, reduce unnecessary waist bulk and give competitors more control over their silhouette. Every pair combines:
A signature ropeless Velcro waistband
Expandable side-zip panels
A tailored thigh and structured glute fit
Raised contour piping to emphasise the waist and quads
Lightweight multiway-stretch fabric
A stage-optimised above-the-knee length
Limited-run designs made to stand apart
You built the physique. Your shorts should frame it.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best men’s physique board shorts?
The best pair is secure at the waist, tailored around the glutes and thighs, suitable for your proportions and compliant with your show’s current rules. It should strengthen your V-taper, show your quad development and stay in position without adjustment while you pose.
Are PATRONUS shorts suitable for NPC athletes?
PATRONUS shorts are designed for men’s physique athletes across all major federations; PCA, WNBF, NPC, IFBB Pro league, OCB, Nabba, ICN and so on. We cater to most federations however rules can differ between federations, countries and events, so every competitor should check the current requirements of the exact show they are entering.
What size men’s physique shorts should I buy?
Measure around the point where the waistband will sit rather than using your jeans size. Compare that measurement with the PATRONUS size guide. If you are between sizes, send PATRONUS your waist measurement, quad measurement, a current photo and the number of weeks until your show for individual guidance.
Why do PATRONUS shorts have side zips?
The side zips open expandable panels that add approximately one inch per side through the waist and leg area. This gives the athlete more control over fit during prep and allows the silhouette to be refined without relying only on a drawstring.
Do PATRONUS board shorts have a drawstring?
No. PATRONUS uses an adjustable Velcro tightening system to create a cleaner front waistband without the central rope, knot and gathered fabric found on conventional board shorts.
How early should I buy my competition shorts?
Because PATRONUS designs are released in limited runs, waiting until the final days before your show may also reduce the colours and sizes available.
